Situational awareness drills and description recall — the 'what did you just see?' exercise, memory palaces, chunking, and how to notice without staring. The foundation of every other tradecraft skill.
The best operatives are not the ones with the best gadgets. They are the ones who notice what others miss and remember it accurately. Observation and memory are trainable skills — and they're the foundation of every other tradecraft discipline.
Before you can notice something wrong, you have to know what right looks like. This is your baseline.
In any environment, take 30 seconds to establish the baseline:
Who's here and what are they doing?
What's the normal noise level?
Where are the exits?
What belongs (and what doesn't)?
Once you have the baseline, anything that deviates from it is a signal worth noticing.
This is the foundational observation exercise. Have your handler do it with you regularly.
